Oregon Attractions
Kathy and I took a road trip last week that landed us here, one of my favorite places in the Northwest. Anymore, when we head out on a trip we take our bikes with us. A few years ago, we got into Road Biking and now it seems odd if we don’t have our bikes on top of the car when we leave home.
The picture you are looking at is of the Three Sisters in Central Oregon. I don’t think there is a pretty view in the world. The nice thing about riding bikes is you see more of what’s around you. When you’re in the car, there’s something about the glass that separates you from the real world. When the air is beating against your face and your lungs are sucking in that fresh, dry, desert breeze, you seem to connect with your surroundings much more closely than you would from inside a shell of plastic, metal and steel.
My wife and I have been married for 25 years. Finding something we can do together has been a godsend. Yes, we get a little obsessed with the equipment and gear. Comfortable, cool looking shorts, shirts, socks and shoes are just part of the overall look. I used to see cyclists wearing those tight shorts and would say “never”. But there’s a reason for the shorts, the lycra and all that padding. Ride a bike for 50 to 75 miles at a time and you too would do just about anything for comfort.
Oregon has some of the greatest back roads when it comes to riding a bike. To those who live along these roadways it’s a way to and from their home. But to the cyclist it’s a way to connect to the land, the state and in our case, each other. My wife used to be a travel agent so she’s really good at finding things. When we go into an area she goes to bikely.com. They have all kinds of maps of places you can ride in different areas of Oregon.
