My Misunderstanding of Understanding

  • I have this misunderstanding about understanding. For some reason I’ve grown up with the idea that people need to understand what I think and feel. It’s almost like a lust for vindication. St Augustine prayed- O lord deliver me from my lust of always vindicating myself. His prayer resonates in my soul. Why do we feel as though we must explain ourselves: we must get people to understand. I claim to be a follower of Jesus Christ. He never explained anything: He left mistakes to correct themselves. As I sit here this morning pouring over my notes, my novels and His word I find that my lack of understanding doesn’t need to be explained to anyone.

So, I guess I can tell you what I think with the understanding that you may never understand…..and that’s okay.

Recently for me wanting to be understood has been tied in to being selfish and saying too much. Without thinking I have spoken and written trying to get someone to understand me instead of listening to them. And understanding them. Politics seems like the opposite of love in some ways. How can someone who is 38 act like they are 18 ? Failure to understand oneself I guess. The better I get at politics the more I fail at love. I think it is that politics-like sports-is often about winning. I do not claim to know what love is about but I do know it is not about winning.

So, if I say I understand about not understanding do I sound ridiculous? In which case, do you understand?
