Label-less
The other day I talked with a group of students from Philomath High School. There is something about talking with young people that is so refreshing. They get it. They understand that the current political system is not working well and they are willing to do something about it. What young people also understand is that we as a culture love to put labels on people. We define people by which box we can put them in. The problem is, most of these kids don’t, won’t and can’t fit into the box we’ve designed and so they, like many, look for a new box.
I was talking with a reporter from the Register Guard Newspaper this morning. During that interview I figured out something about myself. Like those kids, I’ve never been one to wear a label. People try to label me but it never quite sticks. We as humans aren’t comfortable with those who won’t or can’t wear a certain label. We shove, push and try to prod them into submission but it doesn’t work. I felt right at home in this classroom filled with the label-less. I know that’s not a word but I think it should be.

Alot of young people (myself included) are rejecting the labels that the media and society in general want to put on us. It’s refreshing to have a candidate like yourself who is willing to put aside such things and really get down to business.

In terms of labels I think it comes down to understanding this very simple concept. You will not make everyone happy, people will disagree with you and that’s okay.
Emi added these pithy words on Nov 03 08 at 11:42 pmI agree. I’ve never really been one to be labeled either. I was on a trip recently with a group from school, and one of my friends described me as “our anomaly”. I think that’s a label I can live with… A label saying I can’t really be labeled. I can work with that.
I don’t know that we can ever live in a completely label-less society, but it’s something to aspire to.
