Bend Bulletin: Dancer is best choice for secretary of state

Republican Rick Dancer is smart enough to know that partisanship has no place in the decisions made by Oregon’s secretary of state. But his Democratic opponent, State Sen. Kate Brown, wants to keep the position partisan.
The secretary of state is Oregon’s chief election officer, making decisions about keeping elections open and fair. There’s no place for partisanship there.
And there’s no room for it in the secretary of state’s other responsibilities either — auditing how well the government spends taxpayer money, making decisions about state lands, or preserving vital state archives.
Both Dancer and Brown say they will be neutral in enforcing election laws and conducting other business of the office. Frankly, we think Oregonians would see a lot more neutrality from Dancer than Brown.
Brown has a solid record of public service as the leader of the Democratic Party in the state Senate. She uses that to argue that she has proven in the Legislature that she can work with Republicans.
That’s different, though, than putting the interests of her party aside and making neutrality the starting point for her decisions.
Dancer, a former television anchor in Eugene, has made a career out of keeping his opinions under control.
More importantly, he bucks his own party and argues the office should be a nonpartisan position. Brown, predictably, won’t go there. She cannot shed the partisan carapace.
It’s worth noting that Dancer has done another thing that both major parties don’t like. He is supporting Measure 65, which would open up primaries to voters, allowing them to vote for whomever they want, regardless of party. The two top vote-getters in the primary would advance to the general election.
Brown doesn’t want that either.
Instead of giving another partisan politician the keys to office, Dancer is the better choice. His commitment to neutrality in running the office is something Brown does not match.
