“It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the Strong man stumbles, or the doer of deeds could have done it better. The credit belongs to the man in the Arena, whose face marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives Valiantly….who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his Place shall never be with those cold timid souls who have never known Victory or defeat.”

I met a guy at Winco Grocery Store tonight that blew me away. He was a regular guy. He saw me at the store and started talking with me about the Secretary of State’s office that I’m running for. I couldn’t believe how much this guy knew about the position. He said it is his favorite job in the state. He said, what I’ve said many times before, The Secretary of State is the watchdog for the people. I stood there looking at this guy with my jaw hanging to the ground. He said he thought the state should pay me 70 thousand dollars a year and give me a commission based on how much I save by auditing state agencies. That’s probably not the answer but I was so glad to hear that he had actually thought about it. This is not a judgement but he didn’t look like a guy who would pay attention to the Secretary of State’s office. In fact, a lot of people, a lot, don’t even know what the Secretary of State does. Not this guy. He knew it, He had thought about it and he had some interesting ideas. The Watchdog for the people, wow, what a stretch. It’s not like I haven’t spent my entire career as a journalist doing just that. Experience, yep, I’ve got it.
Saturday we joined some local folks on the Buddy Walk to celebrate those with Down Syndrome. Down Syndrome, to me, is not a disability but a special ability. It was so refreshing to be with my friends, who do not judge me based on what I know but based on my heart. God tells us to come to Him as a child. In other words, lose the attitude and take people for who they are. Those I know with Down Syndrome don’t have to work at this they do it naturally. When I’m with them I feel like I’m within a whisper of God. Thanks for inviting me to join you.
