Gradually Letting Go

  • Our youngest son Jess graduated over the weekend. We had all his friends over to wish him well. Jess hangs out with the greatest kids. They love to get wild but their risky behavior centers around riding quads, driving loud cars and hanging out. My wife and I sat and watched Jess and his friends and thought how different the world is now, compared to when I was growing up.

For one thing the high price of gas causes the kids today to talk more about carpooling and conserving than what I remember. They understand that saving money is really important. Instead of selecting the most expensive college, they opt for plans that keep them out of debt and yet moving forward at the same time.

At the Graduation Party we brought out some old videos of Jess when he was a kid. When your dad spent 23 years in television, your birth, air shows and even family vacations sometimes ended up on television so there are plenty of records to prove you used to be small. As Kathy and I watched the videos we got a little wet in the eyes. You remember those moments as if they were still happening. It’s as if you can still smell what it was like back then. For Jess, it’s a fond memory, for us it’s a piece of our life that we’re gradually graduating from and in many ways we don’t want to let go.

But we will let go, slowly. Both our boys still live at home. We know that won’t always be the case. But at this point we’re not ready to see them go. That graduation has yet to come.
